Q.

What's the best diet to manage Crohns?

Can you tell me if you have to have a special diet for Crohn's or foods that should be avoided. Thanks. Enid

Our expert says...

 Hi Enid

For Crohn's disease it's important that you eat a healthy, balanced diet with a high fibre content, unless have a blockages in which case you may need to cut the fibre and go for a low residue diet. It's especially important to eat well  during flare ups, as you will need to replace lost nutrients, although you may not feel like it.  You may find that certain food such as alcohol, fatty foods, raw veg, spicy foods etc  disagree with you or that you need to sticky to blander foods such as as starchy carbohydrates (e.g. potatoes, bread and pasta). Protein foods like fish and meat are also important though. The best way to  find out which food may be causing you a problem is to keep a food diary detailing when you don't feel so well and seeing if this correlates with a pattern of food intake.

When your Crohn's disease is active, your doctor may recommend that you have a liquid diet, made up of simple forms of protein, carbohydrates and fats.
