Q.

Vegetables..... are too many bad for you?

I always thought that vegetables were very good and on other diets was always told to eat as much as I wanted... is this a good idea? I have since been told that too many vegetables are bad for your diet and am not sure if I should continue to eat as much as I am... can you help? Thanks

Hi and thanks for your query.

Like all nutritionists I’m very strongly in the vegetables are very good for you camp! And with the exception of types that are fried or canned in sugar and salt, it’s generally good to eat as many as you can because they’re filling without being high in calories, high fibre and packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

As fruit tends to be higher in calories and sugar than veg, it’s better as a general rule to split your five a day in the ratio of at least 3 portions of veg and no more than 2 portions of fruit.

As a guide, a portion is 80g, which equates to 3 tablespoons of cooked veg, a dessertbowlful of salad, half a pepper or a two inch piece of cucumber.

Potatoes DON’T count as  a veg from a nutritional point of view, because they are part of the starchy carbohydrate group along with bread, pasta and rice.
