Trans Fats

Can you please help me with this Janet, are there any spreads that are low calorie/fat which do not contain trans fats? I was using flora lighter than light but although low cal it does contain them. It feels like a minefield I already have to check everything for aspartame and now this too!! Any help appreciated, thank you x

Our expert says...

Hi there,

Thanks for your message.

Flora has, since 1994, been one of the spreads in the UK to contain no hydrogenated fat, and to be virtually trans fat free. It's impossible to be 100% trans fat free because trans fats do naturally occur in dairy foods, so there will be a tiny amount present from the milk used in the production process. As the levels are minimal, there isn't any concern over health, and at the levels that we currently have in our diets in the UK, trans fats are not deemed to be a health problem. Saturated fat is considered to be a much greater health risk, so using a product such as Flora (whichever variety you choose) will help to reduce your intake of saturated fat. As with all spreads, fat is the main ingredient so do still use it in moderation as the calories will add up.

With regards to aspartame - this is an artificial sweetener often found in diet drinks and foods such as diet cola, chewing gum and fat free yogurts. Based on a thorough review of all the available scientific evidence, the body responsible for food safety at European level (EFSA) have concluded that human consumption of aspartame does not pose any risk to health.

EFSA's scientific experts have drawn upon all available information on aspartame, and have concluded that they pose no toxicity risk to humans, at their current level of consumption. As with all foods, use them in moderation.

I hope this helps.
