Q.

Too much fruit giving me waterworks problems?

Hi, I have been suffering pelvic inflammation for a few days so went to see my doctor. I told him I had started this diet and the amount of weight loss. When I told him about the increase in fruit and water I have been having, he suggested this could be part of the problem, along with infection in the waterworks. He put it down to too much acid in the fruit ! .. I would have thought that the water would help to flush the kidneys and bladder? I have been having regular strawberries, raspberries and bananas, with the odd kiwi. If this this fact, please can you advise me which fruit to eat? ......story of my life......find something that looks like it's working and may have to stop.

Our expert says...

Hi, thanks for your query. I do not know what your actual condition is, but certainly with interstitial cystitis (IC) - characterised by pelvic pain, urgent trips to the loo and pain on urinating - there?s evidence that some foods can exacerbate the condition and these include coffee, chocolate, alcohol, carbonated drinks, citrus fruits, and tomatoes. Acid or potassium content is often suspected as the culprit, so unfortunately there is the possibility, as your doctor has mentioned, that you could actually be having a little too much fruit. I?d maybe go easy for a while and also look at the other foods on the above list and see if there are any of these you may also be eating too much of?

There?s also the possibility that there is actually no link at all, so please don?t despair. By all means still get your five a day fruit and veg, but vary the types you eat and just don't go to over board on the acidic types. I'm sure you can still lose weight and stay healthy but it may just take a little more thought than usual about the foods you choose.

Good luck,

Angela
