Q.

This just doesn't seem to be working for me - why?

I have been on the diet 2 weeks. I've tried it before but I'm still not having any success this time either. I have been good with the cals and I go to the gym nearly every day and swim and walk. I clean up to two hours a day or tidy round because I wipe down every day. So what am getting at is I am not sat down doing nothing. I have cut down on the bread - I have 2 slices every other day. I don't have butter much and I eat healthy, so PLEASE TELL ME WERE I HAVE GONE WRONG . [:(]

Our expert says...

Hi,

Please don?t be too disheartened. After 2 weeks, it really is early days yet and it may be that it takes a week or two for your body to respond to a new eating regime and for the results to show.

I have a couple of suggestions that may help. Firstly, make sure you record everything that you eat ? even snacks and bites of other people?s food! Also, make sure that you are weighing everything you eat, rather than estimating. This is really important in the first few weeks so that you have control over your portion sizes. All these additional, and often overlooked, calories soon add up.

It might also be worth checking how much hidden sugar you could be eating. Often, dieters embark on a low fat diet and don?t realise that the low fat foods they are eating can contain high amounts of sugar to make the product more palatable. Excess sugar in the blood is quickly stored as fat in the body!

I would try to stick to plain, wholesome foods - lots of fruit and veg, lean protein and some complex carbs, such as wholemeal bread and wholewheat pasta. Avoid hard, saturated fats (like cheese and butter), but make sure you have small quantities of healthy fats: for example, olive oil on your salad. All these foods should fill you up and give you loads of vitamins and minerals. Drink plenty of water too and keep up the exercise regime, which sounds good. I am sure you will reach your goal in the end!
