Q.

Should you eat a mixture of protein foods?

Just want to ask, when you are on the site counting calories does it matter if you do a mixture of tuna, chicken and some vegetarian options or should you be doing one or the other eg omnivore only or vegetarian only? Thanks

A.

Our expert says...

Hi,

Thanks for your quetsion.

It's no problem at all to mix up your protein choices between vegetarian options and meat/poultry/fish. This is actually a great thing to do as it will ensure you get a good balance of amino acids - the building blocks of proteins - as different foods contain different types, in varying amounts.

Vegetarian protein foods tend to be much lower in fat than other sources too, so it's great to include these throughout your week. We actually recommend having one meat free day each week, just to cut fat and save money, as well as adding some variety to your meals.

I wrote a blog about this not too long ago, which you might find interesting. I've included a link to this below:

On the flip side, meat tends to supply other important nutrients such as haem iron, and fish can contribute good fats - so it's good to include these too for a variety of nutrients.

I hope this helps, and please let me know if you need anything further.

Best wishes
