Q.

Only lost 2lbs in 4 weeks.............

Hi. I've been on here for 4 weeks now and only lost 2lb, I've gone from eating 2500 kcals a day (not knowing of course!!) to eating my limit of 1400 on here and always (apart from 3 days) sticking under the fat target.

I've eaten my 5 a day and drank lots of water, not ate carbs after 5pm and still only lost 2 lbs! Yeh I've had the chocolate and odd bag of crisps then on weekends and days off work I've not eaten too well (things such as spag bol or pie and mash) but I've always stuck to my daily kcal allowance. Exercise has not been too good because of my asthma but I have been trying really hard to get in 2-3 hrs a week. I'm so desperate I only have 6 weeks to go from a size 12 to a 10 for my holiday.

Our expert says...

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear that you are disappointed with the 2lb weight loss since you joined 4 weeks ago and I understand your frustration if you have a holiday on the horizon. However, don't lose sight of the fact that you have lost some weight and, over the last 4 weeks, you have dramatically changed your eating habits.

I hope you are still sticking with the diet, as you will eventually be rewarded for your hard work. Some people take longer to show a significant weight loss, which is purely down to the individuality of our bodies and how we respond to change.

However, there may be a couple of things you can do to speed things up. Firstly, do make sure that you record absolutely everything that you eat. I am not suggesting that you don't do that now, but it is easy to overlook small things like milk in drinks, the odd sweet or crisps shared with a friend. Unfortunately, they all contain calories that add up! Also, weigh everything, as we all have a tendency to underestimate portion sizes (and hence calories!).

It is difficult to exercise when you have asthma, so well done on achieving 2-3 hours a week. I'd also suggest just trying to be as generally active as possible, as this all increases the calories your body uses. This is not new, but it is worth trying to walk everywhere as much as possible (e.g. do you need to use the lift?) and keep moving around whilst at work (e.g. can you go and see someone rather than send an email?).

Finally, you could reduce your calories to 1300 or 1200 a day for a couple of weeks to see if this kick-starts your weight loss. I wouldn't recommend this long term, but it may be a good short-term strategy for a holiday that is fast approaching. Good luck!
