Q.

Not eating my target but still struggling to lose - help!

I have been doing this diet for three days now, this is my second time on it and I don't seem to be able to reach my cal target a day. I do burn my cal target and more with the exercise (even through it has been tough to do) I have just joined a gym too. I have fibromyalgia which is a painful thing to have, so I thought that the exercise would be the problem and not reaching the cal target a day. I am so used to eating between 800 - 1000 cals a day I don't seem to hit the 1,400 cals a day - it is too much and more than I feel I need to eat in a day. I am so down because I need this to work so bad. I have 3 stone to lose before I go see my consultant in Feb. I eat healthy and been dieting most of my life. What can I do? I do try.

Our expert says...

If you are genuinely eating only this amount of calories (and to be sure you'll need to be strict about weighing and measuring portions or a while), then you really should be losing weight.

However, you say you have only been on this diet for three days which is obviously not long enough to make any decisions about whether it is 'working' or not. Please, if you can, stick with it some more, trying to reach as near you can your 1400 limit, whilst not worrying too much if you can't. Perhaps one of your problems could be if you have been used to frenzied dieting periods with much more uncontrolled eating in between? If this is the case then a better mindset may be to think of this new regime as healthy eating for life rather than a short term fix.

Also, you don't say why you are seeing a consultant, but given your statements about genuinely eating so few calories and not being able to lose weight it is worth getting a full medical check up to make sure there is no underlying reason why the weight is so difficult to get off.
