Q.

Is this stop in weight loss due to my HRT?

I know while my HRT was adjusted after my complete hysterectomy last march that I gained about 5 lbs each time, but now I am settled on the dose I have lost 19lbs over a 12 week period. Brilliant as that may seem I have now hit a brick wall. I joined the gym 3 weeks ago, and use my home stepper the days I don't go to the gym. Inches have come off but my lbs are up and down. I can lose say 2lbs, but put them back on again and have to lose them again. I started the food diary this week and seem not to get to my 1400 a day, so thought I should be losing weight. I also suffer with IBS and know I gain water when I have an attack, but now its getting like I don't want to get on the scales because the lbs are just not coming off. Any advice, should I try harder at the gym, I use a rowing machine, a bike and do some weights 3 times a week for about 45 mins, and do 20 mins on the stepper the other days of the week. Is it my HRT do you think?

Our expert says...

First let me say congratulations for doing so well so far. As your HRT  dosage is sorted out, I’d say that it’s quite unlikely that it is a hormonal effect that is the problem here (other than the ever underlying fact that unfortunately women on the pill or HRT can tend to find it a little bit harder to lose weight).

I'd say it’s more likely that you have just reached a natural plateau. Everything you are doing is good and right, and the only other thing you now need to do is to make sure you stay motivated and calm! The fact that some inches are coming off are what you should focus on right now, and a very good sign. If you can also tackle your IBS, this will also help a great deal. It might pay to keep notes (you can do this online, in your food diary ) to see when you get flare ups and whether there are foods you have that seem to cause them. You might also benefit from having a regular probiotic supplement or drink - Actimel or Activia yogurt for example. I’m sure if you keep going and stay up beat,  you will see the pounds start to come off again.
