Q.

Is there any specific dietary advice for managing MS?

Hi I'm an MS sufferer and am presently having a relapse so I am unable to keep with it at the moment. Any advice for MS sufferers?

A.

Our expert says...

Hi,

Thanks for question.

I’m sorry to hear you’re experiencing a relapse with your MS at present, I do hope things improve for you soon.

Regarding managing your MS through diet, there is some emerging evidence to suggest that there may be dietary changes you can try to help prevent relapses. However this is still a pretty new area of research so there is no official advice available at present.

For example, some research has shown that reducing your intake of saturated fats and increasing your intake of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids may help to prevent relapses. Also, there is a link between low vitamin D levels and MS, so there is some researching linking vitamin D supplementation with improved MS symptoms. However the research that is available has very mixed results, so there are no conclusive findings to base any advice on at this time.

Although the research is quite patchy at the moment, there is a good basis for following an overall healthy diet. So my best advice would be to follow the guidelines for a general healthy balanced diet. The link below might be useful in providing you with some more specific details on what constitutes a healthy diet:

I wouldn’t recommend making any significant changes to your diet without speaking to your neurologist first. They will have access to your medical records and will be able to give you more personalised advice on how best to manage your MS.

I’m sorry I can’t be more specific at this time, but hope this helps a little.

Best wishes
