Q.

Is my diet lacking in dairy?

Hiya. Since I was a baby I've been allergic to eggs and have been restricted on the amount of dairy I should eat. I usually only have the odd bit of milk on cereal, some butter and of course chocolate and ice cream (in moderation). Lately I've been pushing the limits a bit as I?ve been worried I'm not getting enough of the goodness that dairy has and so have upped my milk intake but have been ill with it, so it's a def no no. I've tried soya milk and it made me gag....it's definitely an acquired taste. I'm a very fussy eater too which doesn't help. Am I missing out on vital vitamins etc from dairy products? Should I be taking any supplements or are there other foods I can have a try at eating? Thank you

A.

Our expert says...

Hi,

Dairy products are a good source of protein and calcium, but please don’t worry as you can ensure you obtain sufficient amounts of both of these by eating a healthy balanced diet.  Good protein sources include lean white meat, fish (especially oily fish such as salmon and mackerel) and pulses, which include things like kidney beans, chickpeas and lentils.

There are also a number of non-dairy calcium sources, which you should try to include in your diet each day. The best foods are: leafy green vegetables, such as spinach; small boned fish, such as whitebait, sardines, prawns, shrimps, pilchards and salmon; dried fruits e.g. figs; sesame seeds and tahini (a creamed sesame seed paste); almonds; black beans; and pinto beans. You may also want to try calcium-fortified cereals and orange juice.

You mention that you don’t like soya milk.  I wonder if you have tried some of the other alternatives available, such as oat milk or rice milk?  These are not as strong-tasting as soya milk and many people find them more palatable, so they may be worth a try.

It is also worth knowing that certain drinks can cause loss of calcium from our bodies. This includes alcohol (sorry!) and fizzy drinks, which often contain phosphoric acid that can increase the loss of calcium from bones. So, it is best to drink both these things in moderation. I hope this information is helpful and wish you well.
