Q.

Is it ok to drink alcohol and stay within calorie limit?

I eat really well, and never go over my calorie limit, but I regularly drink twice the amounts of units per week than recommended. I am aware of the negative health implications of this, but wanted to know what effect this will be having on my weight loss if I manage to stay in my calorie limit?

Hello there.

Well, the overall answer to your question is that it is the number of calories you take into your body compared to the number of calories you burn off which affects your weight loss. So, if you are staying within your calorie limit, you should continue to lose weight regardless of where the calories have come from.

But I don?t think it is always quite as simple as that! Alcohol does raise blood sugar levels very rapidly and excess sugar is quickly removed from the bloodstream by insulin and generally stored in fat cells. And there is also the consideration that alcohol can reduce willpower very quickly too???

However, I do feel the need to touch on a worrying trend that has recently started to emerge ? people who restrict their food intake to save calories for alcohol. This appears to be a trend which occurs mainly amongst young women.

I am not saying that this is what you are doing, although it may ring true with other members reading this answer. I think it is great that you are staying within your calorie target, but I do wonder why you would want to use so many of your precious calories on alcohol? You say that you eat really well and are aware of the negative health implications of alcohol. So, maybe you might consider using some of the calories from alcohol for more healthy and nutritious food in the future? I will leave you with that thought!
