Q.

Is a smoothie every day good for you?

Drinking a smoothie every day ... Is that good for you? i.e. Banana , strawberry, apple , grapes , carrot , oranges and yoghurt.

Our expert says...

Hi,

Thanks for getting in touch.

Having a smoothie every day is not a bad thing and can actually help to provide you with lots of vitamins and minerals in one drink. When you blend fruit, it does breakdown the cells and the skin which means it makes the sugars in the fruit more accessible - but it's still a great source of nutrients. In fact smoothies, which blend up the whole fruit, retain some of the fibre from the fruits skin too, which is great. Whereas juices tend to remove this part of the fruit, which isn't so good. So as long as you're blending the whole fruit, then you'll be getting a good mix of vitamins, minerals and fibre.

I would recommend sticking to one smoothie a day as you've mentioned - perhaps for breakfast - and trying to add a good mix of fruit and vegetables, as well as some nuts/seeds for added good fats and perhaps milk/yogurt for added calcium and protein.

Smoothies can be a quick and convenient way to add a wide range of vitamins to your diet - so if you enjoy them, and find them a more convenient option than eating a solid meal - then it's absolutely fine to include.

I hope this helps to reassure you and please let me know if you need anything further.

Best wishes

Emma
