Q.

How can I stop feeling so drained and tired?

I have recently suffered from recurrent illness which has left me drained and tired, add this to a busy job as a teacher and I feel that my energy levels are at a real low. I am maintaining my weight rather than trying to lose weight and I am trying to keep to a light exercise regime as I know that exercise increases energy, but I would like to know whether there are any changes that I could make to my diet to help increase my energy or any supplements that I could take?

I think one of the main changes you could make, if you haven?t already, is to build plenty of low GI or slow releasing carbohydrates into your diet as these tend to keep blood sugar more even and sustain energy levels over a longer period. This means eating fewer refined or ?white? products such as processed cereals, finely milled bread and white rice, and replacing them with more grainy breads, pulses, whole grain pasta and oats .

Also consider the amount of iron in your diet which you get from lean red meat, sardines, nuts, figs and other dried fruit, and deep green vegetables. It?s quite possible you are somewhat anaemic which can occur form a lack of this mineral. As well as putting these back in your diet consume plenty of vitamin C rich sources such as orange juice with meals (this helps the overall uptake of iron), and avoid drinking tea with meals which can interfere with iron absorption. You could also pop a multivitamin and mineral with iron in it. See how things go for a few weeks and then if things don?t start to improve, or of you have other symptoms, pop along to your GP for a check up.
