Q.

How can I stick to my diet while working shifts?

I tend to eat okay when not at work but I work shifts - earlies is no problem as I have time for breakfast - try and organise a meal for lunchtime and am home for 1600 hrs to get normal evening meal. However afternoons and nights we are expected to eat at bizarre times and I find that I will grab half a sandwich and a jelly and although I am eating less I know it is not healthy.

Would it be better to get a protein type drink to take for my evening early morning meal? Along with fruit and say a yoghurt and should I try not to eat after a certain time – most things I have read said don't eat after 1800 hrs.

Hi

Thanks for your query – it is notoriously difficult trying to eat well on shifts, but it sounds like you’re not doing too badly and are at least aware of the pitfalls.

Please don’t worry about eating after 6 o’clock in the evening  – there’s actually very little evidence that eating late affects your weight loss – it’s simply how many calories you have over a 24 hour period that is important. Personally I think when you are doing shifts you should just try to eat regularly at the times available for you to do so, so you stay well fuelled and keep hunger at bay.

I also think your ideas of a protein-type drink with fruit and yogurt is quite a good one – alternatively how about a bowl of fortified high fibre cereal, like bran flakes,  with milk?

The main thing is that you just try to eat the best you can whilst staying within your calorie allowance. Personally I think you already have it well in hand!
