Q.

How can I lose weight faster with my disablity?

Because of physical disability I cannot do much exercise and in consequence have not been able to lose weight easily. I have lost only 3lbs in 7 months. I find it very difficult to eat less than 1400 cals a day and hardly ever do more than 2500 equivalent steps daily. I am at least 3 stone overweight. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your question, and congratulations on your perseverance whilst your rate of weight loss has been so slow. The main thing to concentrate on is that it has been in the right direction, and you haven?t put any weight on!

I'm wondering if you have a helpful GP whether you might be able to chat through what types of physical activity you could do within your limitations. GPs can even ?prescribe? exercise now, and one of the target groups for this is people who are trying to increase their mobility. It? s perhaps worth an investigation an way. The other thing you must rule out is any metabolic conditions that could be hampering your weight loss efforts. A thyroid function test might help for example, and do you know for sure that you don?t have diabetes of metabolic syndrome?

On the food side, I'm thinking you could find it easier to feel satisfied by going for low energy density foods with plenty of fill for calories - these include fruits and vegetables, pulses and whole grain starchy carbohydrates such as brown rice, whole wheat pasta. Soups are great for filling you up too. By concentrating on these really filling foods you may be able to shave off a few extra calories, or at least find it easier to not go above 1400 calories. I hope these few suggestions help to keep you weight loss going in the right direction, and maybe a little bit faster. Best of luck, Angela.
