Q.

How can I keep fruit and veg in my diet cheaply?

Due to a change of jobs and family commitments I am struggling to afford to buy as much fresh fruit and veg as I used to. I am worried about the effect that this is having on my family and wondered if you could give me cheaper ideas for getting more fruit and veg in my diet? Is canned and frozen ok or does it have to be fresh? Any ideas or meal suggestions appreciated!
Thank you

A.

Our expert says...

Hi.

I'm sorry to hear about your change in circumstances, but I am pleased that you are asking for help. Fruit and vegetables are a really important part of a daily diet for the vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and fibre they contain. And at this time of year, with lots of infections around, we all need all the nutritional help we can get!

To save money, I would suggest shopping around if you can. Supermarkets all have different offers on all the time and if you can get to a couple of different ones each week just buy the offers. If you can work out what time of day they reduce the stock that is just about to go out of date, even better! I would also start getting friendly and buying from your local greengrocer. Not only are the fruit and veg they sell often cheaper, they can advise you on what is in season and grown locally, as both options are likely to be less expensive.

At the moment, the following are in season or are about to come into season:

Cabbage, pumpkin, swede, cauliflower, potatoes, parsnips, pears, leeks, chestnuts, cranberries, beetroot, celery, red cabbage, celeriac, turnips, sprouts and swede.

Fresh and frozen veg are the most nutritious options, as tinned products tend to have a lot of their nutrients destroyed during processing. In my view, they don?t taste as good either! Try to be creative when preparing your veg, so it is not obvious they are always the same. For example, mash carrot and swede together with a pinch of nutmeg for a change and, if you find yourself with a surplus of the same veg, use some to make soups.

I hope I've given you some ideas that help.
