Help recovering from gastroenteritis.

I've just had a nasty bout of gastroenteritis and was unable to eat anything at all for nearly 3 days but I have been taking rehydration salts. The symptoms have now cleared but my appetite has not come back and I am struggling to eat more than a piece of toast every few hours. The only fruit I have been able to manage is a pear. I am also struggling to drink as much as I should be. Can you please advise the best foods to get me back on track as I am concerned that my body will now be in starvation mode and I don't want everything I eat in the next week to go back on as fat.

Our expert says...

Hello,

I’m sorry to hear that you have been unwell with gastroenteritis.  But don’t worry, as it is normal for your appetite to be reduced when you are poorly like this.

You are best to eat plain, simple foods to keep your energy levels up and to support your body as it recovers.  You don’t want to eat anything that will be hard to digest, so plain toast and the pear you have been eating are good options.  Other things that are easily digestible are foods based on oats, such as porridge or oat cakes, and plain live bio-yogurt.  When you are ready to eat more, fish and eggs would be good protein choices, with rice as your carbohydrate and leafy green vegetables, such as spinach, rocket or watercress. Also, make sure that any fruit you eat is ripe.

It is really important that you drink plenty of fluids, particularly water or non-caffeinated drinks.  Just sip throughout the day to keep hydrated and try to drink any cold drinks at room temperature, as this will be less of a ‘shock’ to your gut. The rehydration salts will have helped your mineral levels and as you start drinking liquids again you will find it easier to drink more fluids.

With time, rest and a simple diet you should soon be feeling better again. All the best.
