Q.

Grazing on fruit is taking me over my calorie target!

Hello, I just started this diet service and it's been a real shock to realise how much I eat! I'm a grazer, and most of my calories come from fruit and yoghurt, my two obsessions. I have always loved fruit and eat loads of it, at least ten portions per day. I also make sure I get some healthy fats, carbs and lots of veggies as well. Is it possible to eat too much fruit? I regularly go over my calorie allowance, but it's always because of those extra apples and kiwis... Can't be bad, can it?
Thanks

A.

Our expert says...

Hello there.

Yes, you are right that fruit is a very healthy food group, full of vitamins and fibre, although excess fruit can cause gas, bloating or even diarrhoea in some people. As you don't mention any of these side-effects, I assume that they don't apply to you and, if you have eaten a lot of fruit for a long time, your body may have adjusted to this. Yoghurt is very good for you too, particularly the plain, live, bio-yoghurt, as this contains the good bacteria. Be careful of fruit yoghurts, which can be high in sugar.

Unfortunately, the natural sugars in fruit, which make fruit taste so nice, do contain calories and, as you have found out, these add up over the course of a day! This is one of the reasons why it is so important to enter everything you eat into your food diary, as it is easy to mistakenly think that just because it is good for you it is low in calories too.

Of course, it is much better for you to eat four bits of fruit in place of a chocolate bar, but, unfortunately, some restraint is going to be required if you want to stay within your daily calorie target and lose weight! It sounds like your overall diet is very balanced and healthy and I am sure, with a bit of planning, you can adjust your daily fruit intake to achieve your ultimate goal.
