Fat types - High Protein/Low Carb diet

Hi - I have to eat a high protein low carb diet due to a problem with a carb/sugar intolerance. This means that although I am trying to buy foods with low fat, I have to watch the high carb content in them. How will my weight loss be effected if I have to buy high fat content as I have seen already that I have gone over my fat allowance for the last couple of days by about 20g a day, even though I am trying to minimise the amount. Are there any specific types of fat I have to avoid? Many thanks

A.

Our expert says...

Hi,

As long as you stay within your calorie target and minimise the amount of fat that you go over target, this shouldn’t really impact on your weight loss.  You just need to continue to manage the situation the best way that you can.

However, you are right to ask which fats are the good ones, as there are several different types of fat, which I like to call the good, the bad and the ugly!  The ‘bad’ are saturated fats.  These are the fats which tend to be hard at room temperature e.g. those found in butter and cheese, and these have been linked to cardiovascular disease over time.  The ‘ugly’ are trans-fats that are mainly found in fried and processed foods and bakery products.  They are used to prolong a product’s shelf-life.  You should check product labels carefully and minimise these types of fat if possible.

The ‘good’ fats are the unsaturated and the essential fats that our bodies cannot make, so we need to eat them in our diet. The essential fats are called Omega 3 and 6 and are found in seeds, nuts, oily fish (salmon, fresh tuna) and vegetable oils. They are good for our brains and memory, cardiovascular system and heart, and also our joints – just to name a few benefits!

So, if I were you and my diet needed to be high in fat, I know which fats I would eat! I hope this helps.
