Q.

Does a fluctuating calorie intake affect my weight loss?

I find that during the week I have a pretty good routine so the calorie counting works well, but at the weekends I tend to go off. I often go out on a Friday night, I drink a bit so that puts my calories up, then on a Saturday and Sunday I wont get up till about midday so I end up eating 200-300 under my calories. (I'm only on 1,450 to start with)

Over all in a week I end up staying under my calories through a mixture of the under-eating at weekends and increasing my exercise in the week. But I worry that the yo yo ness will effect my metabolism and so make weight loss more difficult? So far it doesn't seem to be, but I'm only 2&1/2 weeks in!
Will it start to make a difference?
Thanks

A.

Our expert says...

Thanks for your query, I don?t think you need to worry about what you are doing - it is quite normal and you need to live your life! Though your calorie intake goes up and down a bit, the fluctuations aren't massive. Whilst it's true that eating at regular times and similar amounts helps regulate your metabolism you are far from doing the major binge / starvation thing which is so unhealthy and unhelpful for slimmers. Do watch the drink though, because it's everso easy to underestimate the calories of drink when you are out. Just as a recap, good reasons to eat regularly and not skip meals include better appetite control and reduced likelihood of overeating, better regulation of your metabolism, and keeping blood insulin and sugar levels on an even keel.
