Q.

Does 'saving' calories for the weekend affect weight loss?

I am 8 stone 10 and used to be 8st 3. My weight has slowly crept up over the last year or so. Not happy with this I would like to get to 8 stone 3 again. So since 1st Nov I have been on a tough regime of eating 1400 per day (or less to keep some back for the weekend) and exercising 200-600kcal a day. I have weighed myself today and I am 8 stone 10. I am so fed up. I do tend to eat more at the weekend because we go out on Sat. night or have people over for dinner but considering I am so restricted during the week should this really affect the results so dramatically? I have been using your site to log everything, and each week it says I am approx 1800 kcal in deficit. Please don't say it is muscle because all my measurements are the same and my clothes are not loose. What can I do?

Our expert says...

Hi,

I do understand your frustration and disappointment at not losing any weight after putting in so much effort, but please try not to get too disheartened.  Unfortunately, it can be quite difficult to lose a relatively small amount of weight that has been gained over a long time period.

Also, if you are currently within a healthy BMI range, this too can make it more difficult to shift the pounds.

Having said all of this, I am not saying that it is impossible to lose this weight, but you may need to accept that it will take some time before you see any results.  I notice that you say that you are holding some calories back for the weekend and, although it is the total number of calories that you eat in a week that counts, sometimes how these calories are spread over a week can make a difference.

Generally, our bodies prefer a consistent supply of food, fuel and nutrients, so I wonder if you try to spread your calories more evenly over the week you might notice a difference in your weight loss?  I think it is worth a try.  I wish you well and good luck!
