Do grapes and raisins count as different 5-a-day portions?

Hi!! My friend and I were wondering about the difference between grapes and raisins. If you eat more than one portion of grapes in a day, it still only counts as one portion of fruit. If you eat raisins in the same day, does it count as different portion of your five a day? Thanks!

You are right that grapes and raisins belong to the same ‘family’ of fruits, black grapes being dried to make raisin and white grapes being dried to make sultanas.  

 

However, the drying process does alter the nutritional content of these fruits, so I believe you can count them as 2 of your 5-a-day occasionally.  However, as they are quite similar fruits, I wouldn’t do this on a regular basis, as I prefer to eat as much variety as possible in all food groups to make sure I benefit from the different nutrients each food contains.

 

This is why I also recommend eating a ‘rainbow of colours’ every day.  The different colours of fruit and veg are linked strongly to the different phytonutrients and antioxidants they contain.  So, apart from looking pretty on your plate, eating these different colours is good for your health too!
