Could my calorie allowance be too low?

My calorie allowance is 1,784 and I exercise every day except for Sunday as it's my job. However this week I have put on weight. I know it is the wrong time of the month, but 4 lbs is a lot to put on (I am 5ft 8 inches). I started at 12 st 9 lbs went down to 12 st and am now 12 st 4 lbs. Why have I put on? Could I be below my BMR and not eating enough? Any advice welcome.

I'm sorry to hear you've put on four pounds and how disheartening that is for you. But though it's true that too few calories can sometime be counterproductive because it's too hard to stick to, you'll never actually put ON weight through reducing calories. I don't know your age to work out an accurate estimate of your BMR (basal metabolic rate, or how many calories your body needs just to tick over at rest), but based on figures for a 30 year old it's likely to be about 1,500 calories, so you can feel comfortable that your allowance isn't too low.

All this leads me to the conclusion that the 4 pounds you have put on is more than likely due to hormonal fluctuations around the time of the month. Some women can put on up to half a stone in fluid, so try not too be worried - you'll probably have lost it again by your next weigh in.
