Q.

Can I eat breakfast a bit later and start the day with fruit

Hi

I know that eating breakfast is really important when you first get up, but if I eat too much too early I find I'm ravenous at about 11:00/11:30 and start attacking my lunch and it all goes down hill from there...Is it enough to eat a portion of fruit like melon or an apple when I first wake up at about 08:00 and then later to have cereal at 09:30 to stop me getting the mid-morning munchies - I know that if you don't eat enough in the morning your body goes into starvation mode, and stores the calories, is my portion of fruit enough to prevent this?

Our expert says...

Yes, your suggested fruit first thing, cereal later, solution to your breakfast problem - which I think many people can identify with - is one which I would definitely support. Don?t panic too much about your body going into starvation mode just because you don?t eat your breakfast immediately on getting up - what about those days wen you are lucky enough to have a lie in!

I know we nutritionists bang on about breakfast a lot, but there?s still room for leeway to do what suits you,. Many people find that changing the type of breakfast they eat can make a difference too, Swapping to something protein based, like a boiled egg can help you keep fuller longer, or go for higher fibre, slower releasing (also know as low GI), carbs such as porridge, All Bran or baked beans.
