Q.

Can I eat below my calorie target if I have diabetes?

Two years ago I had a bowel resection due to cancer. During investigations I was found to also need pancreatic surgery and lost 2/3 of my pancreas. As a result I am a Type 1 diabetic. I also need digestive enzymes to digest things like meat or fats. I am now veggie to avoid the need for continually taking the capsules with meals. I have another 3.5 stone to lose, having lost 2.5 stone already through just cutting down on portion size and cutting down on fats. I am trying to be a bit more organised about things now, and so came here where I was given a 1400 calorie/200 exercise a day regimen, which suits me fine and my blood sugars are good. I find that most days I don't need all those calories. Should I stuff them down anyway (I usually have about 200 spare at the end of the day) to avoid my body thinking its being starved? I usually eat about six or seven portions of fruit and veg each day alongside my essential carbs. I drink plenty and am usually on target with that. Most of our food is fresh cooked and we are careful about its content because of the diabetes. I am exercising for over an hour each day five or six days a week, doing 30 minutes free weights work, and floor exercises for the remainder of the time. I will be building up the cardio as soon as the better weather comes and I can get outdoors - it's not worth the arguments with my husband at the moment. Because of my health history he tends to be very protective of me, which is sweet and I don't want to upset him too much. We don't have any spare money to go to a gym or anything. I could build up cardio at home I guess, but it would have to be with DVD workouts. In a nutshell - is it OK to eat between 100 and 200 short of my 1400 each day?

Our expert says...

Hi

In a nutshell: yes!

In fact having looked at your diary I can see that you’re  not actually eating that far below the 1400 cals, but  this is not so apparent because you’re using the combined rather than separate diaries. In fact you’re consuming around 1300-1350 calories but you’re doing a bit more than the 200 cals-worth of exercise a day, which makes the net effect seem that you’re a little bit more under your target than you actually are. As long as you’re feeling satisfied and comfortable with the amount you are eating it is close enough to your target for me to have no worries. I hope this helps, and very well done on your progress so far!
