Q.

Can a one day fast make up for over-eating?

Hi, I'm on 1800 cals a day and 200 cals to burn in order to lose 2lbs a week from my weight of 13.5 stone.
My question is, if I blow it and have a night where I have curry with friends and some drinks etc. and go maybe 800-1000 over the limit (I've done this once or twice in the last few weeks), can I try to limit some of the 'damage' by fasting the next day, or only eating fruit - i.e., getting by on about 500 cals the next day so that my whole weekly target isn't ruined?

I've heard that periodic fasting can be healthy. But other's seem to think that having few or no calories one-day will only encourage your body to start storing fat.

Question: is a one day fast something that can help me get my weekly calories back under control after a 'naughty' day? Thanks!

Our expert says...

Hi,

This is a good question as, being realistic, we all have days when we over-eat. However, I'm not sure that having one day fasts to compensate for these days is the best way to manage your calorie intake over a week.

Fasting is a good way to detoxify the body, but is best done occasionally and under supervision if possible. I also wouldn't recommend trying to fast and carry on with your normal life's activities, as this can put your body under a lot of stress. Fasting is best carried out when you can relax and pamper yourself for the day.

However, the principle of recouping the additional calories eaten by reducing the number of calories you eat is a good one. I would recommend that you achieve this by dividing up the excess calories over a number of days and reducing your calorie targets for these days accordingly. This way you can meet your weekly target and still eat a balanced healthy diet, but just with reduced portion sizes. Eating in this way will not make your body feel it has gone into starvation mode and you should still be able to exercise and carry on with your day to day activities.

Of course, minimising the damage in the first place makes it much easier to recover from, but I'm sure you don?t need me to tell you that!
