Q.

Are yogurt coated dried fruit and nuts healthy?

Hello - I wonder how much calories are in yogurt coated fruits e.g. yogurt coated apricots or almonds? Are they healthy?

A.

Our expert says...

Hi,

Yogurt coating fruit and nuts will unfortunately add calories, fat and often sugar to the product, but the actual amount will depend on the brand and product bought. The packaging should give you this information, or you can contact the manufacturer direct. However, they still remain a healthy snack, especially in comparison to a chocolate bar!

Fruit, including dried fruit, and nuts are always a healthy option and are really useful as a snack as they are easily transportable. Dried apricots are a good source of fibre, potassium and iron (so can be good if you are feeling tired or anaemic) and also carotenes, which give apricots their distinctive orange colour. Carotenes have been shown in research to be beneficial in helping to prevent heart disease and cancer. However, be careful not to eat too many dried apricots, as they are high in natural sugars and can be very moorish, increasing your calories all too easily!

You need to be equally restrained with almonds, I'm afraid, as nuts tend to be high in fat, albeit the good fats that our bodies need. Almonds are a healthy food, as they are a good source of minerals (potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron and zinc) and Vitamin E and all these nutrients help prevent heart disease too. Just be careful not to get carried away once the bag is open!
