Q.

Are there any foods that speed up your metabolic rate?

I have been diagnosed with PCOS after seeing a fertility consultant. The consultant told me that they will be able to give me medication to promote ovulation (as I am not ovulating at the moment) - that will hopefully result in a pregnancy.

However, she has said I can not have this medication until I lose 8 stone! I have looked up PCOS on the internet and have found that foods which will increase my metabolic rate would be good.

Can you advise me what foods these are? Also am I right in thinking I should limit carbs and sugar?

Hi,

Well, the good news is that you are right to be looking into ways to reduce your weight. This will not only allow you to take medication to promote ovulation, but losing weight may also help your hormone levels start to return to normal. In one research study, 82% of women with PCOS who were not ovulating showed an improvement by losing weight alone. Even losing a small amount of weight has been shown to improve the hormone profiles of some women.

The bad news is that foods which increase your metabolic rate to help increase weight loss do not really exist. Unfortunately it is not that easy! A slight increase in metabolic rate has been observed in some people when drinking Green Tea, but you would have to drink a lot of cups every day for this to happen and I would be surprised if you noticed any increase in your weight loss.

However, certain dietary measures can help with you with weight loss and also PCOS. As you have suggested, you should certainly avoid sugar and sugar-containing foods and only eat complex carbohydrates such as wholemeal bread, wholewheat pasta and brown rice. This is basically a low GI (glycaemic index) diet that will help balance your blood sugar and insulin levels.

You should eat at least 8 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, for their high fibre and nutrient content, and also plenty of foods that are rich in phytoestrogens. These are substances that occur naturally in foods such as soya, chickpeas and lentils, which have a balancing effect on our hormones.

Eat good fats found in oily fish, nuts and seeds and avoid high-calorie and harmful saturated and trans-fats. Drink plenty of water, less caffeine and alcohol and try to avoid additives and preservatives in food.

Eating this type of diet should help you lose weight, as long as you count your daily calorie and fat intake. It will take time, but it should also improve your health and support your body as you prepare for pregnancy, so it is definitely worth it. Good luck for the future!
