Q.

Are sprouted seeds part of the 5 a day?

I love sprouted seeds and use them in salads a lot - alfalfa and radish, and also sunflower. I don't think they're in your database so I'll need to add them. Do they count towards the 5 a day?

Our expert says...

Hi,

I pleased to hear that you like sprouted seeds and use them a lot.  They are highly nutritious and very good for you.  They contain high concentrations of antioxidants, which protect you against disease and ageing, and are packed with vitamins, minerals, protein, enzymes and fibre.  The process of soaking and germinating the seeds also makes the nutrients available in the most easily digestible form.

Alfalfa sprouts, for example, are a very good source of Vitamin C, B2, B5, folic acid and the minerals copper, molybdenum, zinc, manganese and magnesium.

Research has shown that sprouted seeds help keep the immune system strong.  In my view, they are the equivalent to nature’s very own vitamin and mineral pills!

They are also low in calories and I would use a figure similar to bean sprouts, around 28 cals per 100g and 0.6g fat in your food diary.

In terms of counting these towards your 5 a day, I would count sprouted seeds in the same way as pulses i.e. that you can count them as one portion of your 5 a day. This is due to the fact that we need to eat a variety of fruit and veg each day to get all the nutrients we need.

So, enjoy and happy sprouting!
