How eating well can keep coughs and colds at bay
'An apple a day keeps the doctor away....' We all know the saying, but how big an impact does your diet have on your immune system?
Well, a huge impact actually. A healthy diet will aid the body in fighting the many germs we come into contact with every day, as well as helping to combat the detrimental effects of sedentary modern lifestyles and pollution. Here's what you should be eating if you're feeling under the weather:
Colourful eating
There's no one food that stands out as being important for your immune system - it's your diet as a whole that matters. However, as usual, it's those dietary big guns - the fruit and vegetable family - that can really make a difference. They are packed with vitamins and minerals that help your immune system stay fighting fit and you should try to include a wide colour spectrum in your diet to maximize the range of nutrients you get.
Daily protein
The importance of getting adequate protein for a healthy immune system is often overlooked. Eat a good couple of vegetarian protein sources - beans, quorn or tofu - every day.
Vitamin supplements
A healthy balanced diet should provide you with all the vitamins and minerals you need to maintain a healthy immune system. Vitamins A (found in liver and eggs) and C (found in citrus fruits) are particularly important. Start taking daily multi-vitamin supplements if you're afraid you're not getting enough.
Still feeling under the weather?
You may feel you're eating all the right things but still can't shake off that cold or are feeling permanently tired. If you are slimming you may have lowered your intake of carbohydrates which can affect your energy levels, so make sure you're still eating plenty of wholemeal pasta, rice and bread.
Otherwise, your lethargy may be due to your lifestyle rather than your diet. If you are extremely busy or stressed, try taking some time out to have to yourself and unwind, and make sure you're getting 8 hours sleep a night. If problems persist, go and speak to your GP.
